Other Countries The Queen Ruled

Nations of The Commonwealth Realm (as of Late 2022)

What are the 14 other countries where the Queen ruled? Since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, there’s been a lot of mentions about the commonwealth realm: the 15 nations where she was the head of state. That’s 14 countries outside of her homeland the UK. But I got annoyed bc then the reporters move on, assuming we all know what the hell they’re talking about. So for those who aren’t familiar with it, here’s a breakdown:

The Commonwealth Realms (which is a part of, but different from, the larger Commonwealth of Nations) are a specific group of nations whose head of state is the British monarch (until yesterday, that was Queen Elizabeth). They are all independent states but were formerly colonies of the British Empire. For most of them, the Queen has been their only head of state: she’s on their money, stamps, and post boxes.

Each nation has their own head of government and independent legislatures… the monarch’s role is mostly symbolic, but its important nonetheless. Since they’re not usually there, the monarchs appoint a governor-general to carry out their duties in each country (even Canada has a governor-general).

Here's the 15 countries of the realm:

  1. The UK (duh)

  2. Canada

  3. Belize

  4. The Bahamas

  5. Jamaica

  6. Saint Kitts and Nevis

  7. Antiqua and Barbuda

  8. Saint Lucia

  9. Saint Vincent & The Grenadines

  10. Grenada

  11. Australia

  12. New Zealand

  13. Papua New Guinea

  14. Solomon Islands

  15. Tuvalu

Being part of the realm has been a hotly debated topic in many of these countries. Barbados ditched the monarchy and left the realm last year, and its expected others may soon too. The death of the Queen may force these decisions one way or the other.
